The bird sanctuary is made up of display cages for some animals and gigantic cages with walkways through them for others which really gives one an up-close-and-personal experience. The park is home to many breeding pairs of endangered species and a haven for many birds that were obtained illegally and had theirs wings clipped or were otherwise mutilated. Sadly, the trade in bird poaching continues - there are even signs at the airport about it.

The flamingos have mirrors in their pen because they get really nervous unless they are in packs of hundreds or thousands. The mirrors calm them down.

Pigeon attack! Well, not really, but he sure startled the hell out of me by flying right at my head. Turns out he was just looking for a perch.

I think it's fair to say this was one of our favorites. They are so tame and good-natured.

There are some non-birds in the park, too...

Some other species of toucan are represented here, too.

This guy was a real prima donna.

See how he poses for the camera?

I don't trust him completely, but he made a beeline for me. Maybe because we're wearing the same colors?

Maybe. But it turns out he sure liked the glasses in my pocket!

I'm not the only one who made some new friends.
